Drivers are being urged to use a nifty trick involving a compass to park their cars overnight this winter which comes in handy on cold, icy winter mornings.

The advice comes as fuel prices are still among the highest they have ever been, putting pressure on households nationwide.

And as such, drivers are looking for any saving they can to help make ends meet, with one recent piece of advice involving abowl of water on the passenger seat.

And motoring experts at ChooseMyCar.com are also advising of a clever idea to try for which a compass could come in handy on these cold and icy winter mornings, especially with snow on the way too.

And at the very least, the trick will save you time in the morning too as temperatures plunge and we all face a battle with ice and frost.

The advice is to park facing the direction of the sunrise the next morning.

The reasoning behind this is, if your windscreen faces the direction from which the sun comes, then the early morning light will hit your car for the maximum amount of time before you have to drive it.

As such, the sun on your windscreen will help to defrost the car more quickly. That will not only save you valuable de-icing time in the morning but it will also, crucially, save money on petrol or diesel (or even electricity if it's an EV!).

If you don't have to keep your engine running for as long to defrost the car, then you won't waste as much valuable fuel.

Now, if you know your survival tips, in the UK (and everywhere) the sun rises from the East, particularly the North-East in the north of the UK.

So to figure out which direction the morning sun rises, grab a compass, or these days, a compass app on your phone, and turn on the spot to work out where East is. Then, if possible, park so that your windscreen or driver's side of the windscreen faces East, or as close to East as you can get it.

Other experts' tips include reverse parking into spaces. Apparently, this saves fuel because when your engine is warm, it uses less fuel than when it's cold and needs to get to temperature. So reverse parking -which takes time - on an already warm engine will be cheaper than reversing out on a cold engine, or so the experts say.

Parking in a garage or putting your car under a blanket will help keep your car warmer, thus giving you better fuel economy as it has less need to warm up for as long.

Which leads onto the final point: fuel. Petrol and diesel are heavy, and putting 60 litres of petrol in your car will weigh it down. It's cheaper to run your car if it's lighter, so consider buying half a tank at a time instead of always filling to the maximum your tank will take.
