This year's Eid ul Fitr is set to arrive this week, as the moon plays a big part in the Islamic festival.

During the Islamic Calendar, the sighting of the new crescent moon marks the beginning of the month. Astronomy is very important forIslamicevents and festivals, including Ramadan andEid.

In total, it takes 29.5 days for the moon to pass through each of its phases. However, it is not practical to have half a day in a month, so in an Islamic month, there can be either 29 or 30 days.

Ramadan lasts 29 to 30 days it cannot last longer than 30 days. This means if no moon is sighted on Thursday, Eid will automatically fall on Saturday.

The amount of days in a month depends on when the new moon is visible. How visible the new crescent is varied across the world - similarly to sunset and sunrise times - so not everyone will be able to see it at the same time.

Saudi Arabia has confirmed it will celebrate Eid on Friday, April 21. Other countries have said they will celebrate it a day after on Saturday, April 22.

Eid weather forecast for Yorkshire

With Saudia Arabia announcing Eid ul-Fitr will take place tomorrow, thousands of Muslims across Yorkshire will head out to celebrate.

The weather forecast, according to the Met Office, predicts rain with risks of thunder.

It says: "Cloudy with rain spreading northwards through the late morning and afternoon. Further showers, heavy with risk of thunder, pushing inland from Friday evening.

"Breezy once again and feeling rather cool. Maximum temperature 11C."

Qatar, UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait confirm Eid ul-Fitr date

Eid has also been declared in Qatar, UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait following the sighting of the crescent moon meaning it will be celebrated on Friday, April 21.

What does Eid-ul-Fitr mean?

The word "Eid" means "festival" or "feast" in Arabic.

"Eid-ul-Fitr" means "Festival of Fast Breaking" and is celebrated by Muslims all around the world.

This year, it will fall on April 21 or 22, depending on the country.

Why is Eid celebrated on different days around the world?

Islam uses a calendar based on the moon cycles which means Ramadan starts when the new moon first appears in the night sky and ends as the moon wanes to the other side.

Due to this, countries around the world will report the sighting at different times, meaning Eid ul-Fitr will be celebrated on different days.

Saudi Arabia has confirmed the crescent moon sighting and said Eid ul-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, April 21.

Meanwhile, other countries such as Japan, Australia and India, will celebrate the day after on Saturday, April 22.

Dr Omar Tabbaa, chairman of the mosque, said the mosque is hopeful of having a big celebration this year.

“We hope to adopt back to our full capacity before the covid 19 restrictions and we will have three Eid prayers”, he said.

“After the prayer, we will serve some coffee and tea and we distribute toys to all children and they play for hours and hours in the mosque.

How is Eid celebrated?

Eid al-Fitr is celebrated on the very next day at the end of Ramadan so Muslims are required to not continue their fast on this day.

Some people tend to buy new clothes just for the occasion, but those who can't afford them are expected to make an effort to look well-dressed.

After this, families will gather together and enjoy breakfast before attending the Eid prayer at the Mosque.

An Eid prayer is held by an Imam - a Muslim spiritual leader and everyone is urged to participate in Eid prayers, including children. After this, it is time to feast.

How to wish someone a happy Eid

During Eid one of the most common greetings you will hear is Eid Mubarak!

Directly translated, this means "blessed feast" or "blessed festival", and is a popular way of expressing celebrations to family and friends.

The time difference between the UK and Mecca is two hours ahead from us. On Thursday (April 20), the moon will not be visible. On Friday (April 21), the moon will be much more visible.

Sunset is expected to occur at 6.42pm, while moonset will be at 8.05pm (local times). On Saturday (April 22), the moon will be visible again, with sunset at 6.43pm and moonset at 9.05pm (local times).

Unknown date could frustrate Muslims

Not knowing which date the three day celebration will fall can be quiet frustrating for Muslims in the UK as they will need to book annual leave at such short notice.

However, most scholars believe Ramadan will most likely take place on Saturday, April 22, but an official announcement is due to take place on Thursday after sunset.
