As we're pounded by the misery ofstorms and driving rainand with snow on its way we all need some much-needed cheer.

And what could be more enticing than taking your damp coat off and hearing the glorious hiss of a beer pump, the crackle of a real fire, and the laughter of amusing regulars at a classic Yorkshire hostelry.

Although they are a dying breed there are still plenty of classics to enjoy and anyone searching for great cask ales, stone floors, a cast of characters and low ceilings need not be disappointed.

And you don't need to travel all the way to the Yorkshire Dales to satisfy the urge - often some of the best ones are right under your nose here inHuddersfield.

The Sair atLinthwaitebeplay官网手机登陆是一个almost perfect example of a classic kind of pub that is fast disappearing. Perched high on a hill it can take some getting to but it's definitely worth it.

Jim Crabtree took it on after his legendary father Ron died and it has all the cosy snugs and fires you could wish for as well as a stunning selection of home-brewed beers.

Sair Inn, Linthwaite, Huddersfield.

I'm not sure there are quite as many dogs and cats curled up in the snugs as there used to be but it is very much a homely place and Jim is a very welcoming host with a kind word for everyone whether you've been going in there for years or it's your first time through the doors.

I used to go to The Dusty Miller atLongwoodof a lunchtime nearly 40 years ago when I was a student atHuddersfield New Collegeand its charm has never waned though I still get a pang at the loss of the ivy.

It has proper snugs, real fires, home-brewed ales including classics such as Platinum Blonde, a great no-nonsense landlady, and that essential characteristic - low ceilings.

The Olde White Beare
The Olde White Beare

A few miles away in Holmfirth there is one pub that always finds its way onto everyone's list of cosy favourites - The Nook.

Slightly hidden away off Victoria Street in the village centre it remains largely unchanged from when I first went in as a callow 18-year-old.

The snug on the right as you go in and boasts one of the best real fires you're likely to come across.

Try the home-brewed Baby Blonde beer and I do like the jukebox here which has a great selection of tracks for just a few pence.

Slightly further afield in Calderdale, it's hard to imagine anywhere nicer than The Old White Beare at Norwood Green.

This pub has won major national awards in its time and it's easy to see why.

It ticks all the boxes with wood panelling, cribbage bars, low ceilings, real fires, snugs and a good selection of real ales. There's very good food to be had too and a separate restaurant.

When it comes to the Dales my first thought these days is always The George at Hubberholme - a favourite haunt of the Yorkshire author JB Priestley.

Mullion windows, a range fire and centuries of history unfold before your eyes.

A nice touch is that the pub's owners still keep up the tradition of lighting a candle in the bar during opening hours in a nod of recognition to its association with the beautiful St Michael and All Angels church nearby.

Not too far away is The Red Lion in the tiny but picturesque village of Burnsall, situated by the River Wharfe not far from Skipton.

These days it has been developed and puts on weddings and all that kind of thing but it has remained true to the things that made you want to go there years ago - great beers, terrific food, excellent accommodation and relaxing rooms that make you never want to leave.

The centuries-old inn was owned by the same family from 1991 to 2021 but was taken on by the Daniel Thwaites group last year.
