Josh Windass has called on his Owls team-mates to keep piling the pressure on the teams above them in the race for automatic promotion. With just over a third of the 2022/23 season gone,Wednesdayare third in League One.

Darren Moore's troops are three points adrift of second-placed Ipswich Town and seven behind leaders Plymouth Argyle. ButWindass, an unused substitute in Saturday's victory over Burton Albion, is bullish about their promotion chances.

The forward told Yorkshire Live: "I don't really look at the table. We go out and try to win every game. If we do that, the league will take care of itself.

"We have played Plymouth and Ipswich this season. They are two good sides. They have two very good managers in charge of them.

"I fancy ourselves against anyone, to be honest, and I am sure we will improve as the season goes on."

The win over the Brewers movedthe Owlscloser to the Tractor Boys, who threw away two points in a crazy match against Charlton Athletic. When asked if Plymouth and Ipswich are their main challengers for a top-two finish, Windass replied: "At the moment, you would have to say so. They are in the two spaces above us and they are the two to catch.

"We would rather be top of the league than third. We come to training every single day and we work as hard as we can. We go into every game trying to win.

"I honestly think that when we are on our top form with the way that we play that there are not many teams that can match us."

"There is pressure when you play out from the back because if you lose the ball then the other team can attack you and score a goal. But when that happens, you have got to keep doing it. That's what the manager wants.

"Obviously, you can get a few moans and groans when you are doing that. But in my opinion, it is better than kicking it 80 yards and having players competing for headers and 50/50 balls and not being good to watch."

Moore's men are without a league match until Saturday, November 12. Attentions have turned to back-to-back cup matches against Morecambe and Southampton.

First up is the Shrimps at Hillsborough in the FA Cup on Friday night. They will then make the long trip south to Saint Mary's Stadium for a Carabao Cup third round clash against Southampton a week tomorrow.
