But Helmsley is a worthy tourist attraction in its own right. Described by Welcome to Yorkshire as like 'the perfect English market town' it has a busy market square, quaint tearooms, traditional real ale pubs, a castle and even an open-air swimming pool for when it's warmer.

It's also a great spot for a proper sit-down meal. Those of a strong gastronomic bent – and fatter wallets – should try the Michelin-starred Star Inn, at Harome, two-and-a-half miles away or The Hare, five miles away in Scawton.

And no trip to Helmsley would be complete without a visit to Helmsley Castle. The 12th-century castle's esteemed guests included Edward III. The East Tower, which is the best preserved part of the castle, was heightened for the king's visit in 1334.

We'll let the photos do the rest of the talking.
